Book Musings: Teaching Children About Racism
For many of us who are White folks, teaching our White kids about racism is like trying to teach them to speak a language that we ourselves don't know as well as we need to. So how do we talk to our children about race honestly, openly, and in age-appropriate ways? We know that being color blind is not the answer; it ignores history and current conditions and allows racism to continue. We have to educate, and these two recent publications can help first day teachers, parents, and other caregivers address racism in ways that open eyes and conversation.
