Book Musings: Teaching Children About Racism

For most of us who are White, teaching our White kids about racism is like trying to teach them to speak a language that we ourselves don't know as well as we need to.  So how do we talk to our children about race honestly, openly, and in age-appropriate ways?  We know that being color blind is not the answer; it ignores history and current conditions and allows racism to continue.  We have to educate, and these two recent publications can help first day teachers, parents, and other caregivers address racism in ways that open eyes and conversation.

Something Happened in Our Town follows two families, one Black and one White, as they discuss a local police shooting of a Black man.  The book comes with a note to caregivers and teachers to assist them in discussing race and racism with young children.  The note includes sample dialogues and child-friendly definitions.  The book is geared toward ages 4-8.

Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America has won much critical acclaim.   It offers insights for teaching White children how to address racism when they encounter it, and how to be mindful of racial relations while understanding their own identity and the role they can play for justice.
