It is with pleasure and a deep sense of collaboration that Quaker Press of FGC and the Faith & Play Group offer to Friends, and friends of Friends, this revised and expanded edition of Faith & Play™: Quaker Stories for Friends Trained in the Godly Play® Method. Stories published before 2015 have been revised based on experience and feedback, and new stories have been added along with additional supplementary materials developed to support storytellers.
Faith & Play™ is a story-based curriculum focused on building spiritual community with
children and offering them images and language to express their wonder and experience
of the Divine. Faith & Play™ grew out of Friends’ work with the Godly Play® story
curriculum, which embodies the Montessori belief that play is children’s work and has
These curricula support continuing revelation; multiple perspectives on a story; silence, reflection, and corporate sharing as valuable components of the spiritual life; and the diversity of ways the Spirit works within each person.
While the Godly Play stories used by Friends are based on the Bible, Faith & Play stories include Quaker faith, practice and witness, as well as some Bible content told in ways that reflect Quaker sensibilities.
Faith & Play stories are meant to be used in conjunction with Godly Play and we do not recommend using either resource without adequate training.
For use by teachers with groups ages 4 and up.

What Friends Say About Faith & Play:
Faith & Play™ stories enable me to share with children the tools of faith that can open minds and hearts to the Spirit. They tell us about how the Spirit has guided Quakers before us and help us to “know how to love, what to do, and who to be.” Share the stories with children, youth and adults — they are a gift! — Anne Collins, Co-author, Sparkling Still
It is a deep joy to witness the creation of a supplement for Quakers that contains the core elements of Godly Play®: a deep understanding of narrative, an economy of words with plenty of spaciousness, and an invitation to find one’s own story in these stories. The Faith & Play™ Group invest such care in their work writing, sharing, and vetting the stories, it is no surprise that other denominations are using them. Many teachers have said that Faith & Play™ is the answer they have been looking for to help our children understand and participate more fully in our Quaker faith and practice. — Caryl Menkhus Creswell, Godly Play® Trainer
Faith & Play™ is a spiritual experience that is shared by all Friends involved — religious educators, children, adults, and multigenerational groups. These stories of Quaker faith, practice, and witness are an invitation for all of us to get closer to the mystery of the Presence of God and to wonder about our own spirituality in a way that makes room for everyone.— Joy Duncan, Illinois Yearly Meeting Religious Education Coordinator
I love telling Faith & Play™ stories at my school. Our students treasure them. There is an extraordinary feeling of a “covered meeting,” a strong sense of unity and community among the students, teachers, and the storyteller. It becomes a “sacred space,” in which students not only learn about Quakers, they also connect their own lives to the lives in the stories. — Lori Sinitzky, Teacher, Greene Street Friends School
