The Wisdom Of John Woolman
John Woolman, an 18th century Quaker, was prominent in the movement against slavery, in equal treatment of native Americans, and in the plight of the poor. Reynolds gives a sketch of the man, his philosophy, his social and spiritual background. That sketch is followed by an anthology of quotation from the writings of John Woolman.
Author Reginald Reynoldswas an English Friend whose public life began in 1930. Having gone to India, he was employed by Mahatma Gandhi as his emissary to the Viceroy. He continued to work for colonial liberation and better race relations. "The Wisdom of John Woolman" was first published in 1948 (Unwin). Subsequently he wrote an essay entitled "John Woolman and the 20th Century" which was published by Pendle Hill (Pamphlet #96) in 1956.
